What are SCORM files?

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) files are used to create and distribute e-learning content in a standardized format that ensures compatibility across various Learning Management Systems (LMS). These files allow educators and trainers to package educational materials, such as courses and assessments, into a ZIP file, which can then be easily uploaded and managed within an LMS. SCORM files facilitate tracking learner progress, completion rates, scores, and time spent on courses, providing a consistent and interoperable solution for online education and training programs.

Benefits of SCORM

  • Interoperability: SCORM-compliant content can be used across various SCORM-compliant LMS platforms.

  • Reusability: Content can be reused in different courses and LMSs.

  • Durability: Content remains functional even when LMS technology evolves.

  • Accessibility: Content can be accessed across various platforms and devices.

  • Maintainability: Easier to update and manage content.

Common Use Cases

  • Corporate training programs

  • Educational courses

  • Compliance training

  • Certification programs

Importing SCORM Files Into Your Learning Management System

Easily import your SCORM files into your LMS by following the instructions below. For this example the LMS KnowBe4 with 4th edition SCORM will be used. Please note that depending on the Learning Management System, the process may vary. We recommend following the instructions provided by your LMS.

The above ZIP files may need to be unzipped first after downloading. Every unzipped folder contains subfolders for each module. These contain their respective zip files which can then be uploaded to your Learning Management System as described below. Some systems may allow import in bulk. Please check prior to importing which SCORM version is required by your LMS.

  1. In the KnowBe4 ModStore, click Add Content in the "Uploaded Content" tab.

  1. Select Upload SCORM from the dropdown menu.

  1. Fill out the specifications in each field as needed, including Content Title, Description, Expected Duration and the Training Topic.

There are two additional checkboxes which can be optionally selected: Not Recommended for KnowBe4 Learner App (checking this box will recommend users to not use the app) and Display in Library (checking this box will display the finished learning content in the LMS library). The file selected for ‘Artwork’ will function as the thumbnail.

Once the content information has been specified, click Save.

  1. Next, select Add Language File and upload the SCORM package as a ZIP file. Once uploaded, KnowBe4 will automatically start a verification process to review the uploaded file.

  1. After the SCORM package has been successfully uploaded, click Launch File to manually review and confirm that the learning content is compatible with the learner experience. Once confirmed, check the review boxes and click Approve File.

  1. Before the learning content can be made available for users, read and agree to the Terms and Conditions of your Learning Management System and click Publish.
